Win Millions in the Land Down Under at the Aussie Millions
If you think poker and the televised multi-million dollar tournaments that come with it stops at WSOP and big land-based tournaments in European and American continents, then you’re most probably dead wrong. For here in Australia, one can find more than just Kangaroos and the Outback, but you can also see one of the richest tournaments dedicated for the love of poker.
The Aussie Millions
The Crown Casino Poker Championship, which is more popularly known as Aussie Millions, is a poker tournament held in Australia. Aussie Millions has been in existence for ten years, handing out big prizes for players based not only in Australia but in other countries as well. It is an annual poker tournament held in the famous Crown Casino in Melbourne, and every year, hundreds of players from Australia and other countries like New Zealand, US, Canada, Italy, England, Norway, Ireland, Denmark, and Lebanon participate in this multimillion dollar poker event. The event has also attracted international poker celebrities like Joe Hachem, Daniel Negreanu, John Jaunda and Phil Ivey.
Aussie Millions started out in 1997, but the Australasian Poker Tournament, a poker championship that sports a $1000 buy-in Main Event joined by 74 entrants, commenced only in the summer of 1998. The Aussie Millions that we all know started in 2001 with 40 participants vying for AU $200,000 prize pool. The entrants steadily grew up to the recent Aussie Millions held in January 2008, where 780 players from 32 countries joined the tournament. This number of players pushed the prize money from AU $74,000 in 1998 to AU $ 7,800,000.
Being in Aussie Millions
Aussie Million is a great poker tournament, but with AU $10,000 buy-in, it definitely calls for a loot bag of guts and a whole lot of bankroll. Those who have the money to spend to enter the tournament can save themselves a comfy seat into the tournament, but those who have other plans on spending their decent months’ pay can enter into less-pricey, year-round, Crown Casino-sponsored satellite tournaments and fight their way through other players dreaming to hit the “Big One”.
Of course, such feat requires beyond mediocre amount of skills, intuition, aggressiveness, and other things that truly define a poker champ, but such qualities need not to be found exclusively in poker champs though.
Tell that to the Russian Alexander Kostritsyn, the 21-year old Aussie Million Champ, who, in doing so, beat poker celebrity Erik Seidel and walked away AU $1.6 million richer.
