Dramatic New Format for the World Series of Poker Main Event

The WSOP is the most prestigious poker event in the calendar, and for years has followed
a similar format, albeit allowing for the enormous swelling of participants that has taken
place in recent years. Signaling perhaps the start of a new era in Poker, this year the final
table of the massive $10,000 buy-in No Limit Hold ʻem main event will not be staged until
November.
Despite the other 54 events that comprise the World Series remaining virtually untouched,
the dramatic ʻfaceliftʼ to the main event has caused ripples through the poker community.
The event will begin in July and follow the traditional schedule of previous years but will be
halted once the players have been whittled down to the final table. The remaining nine
participants will then receive tournament winnings of ninth place but will not continue their
battle until mid-November. In a bid to build the momentum and excitement of the event to
levels received by other US sporting events such as the Super-Bowl and NBA, it is felt this
new format will elevate the excitement and anticipation to new heights.
