Phil Hellmuth gets let off
July 17, 2008
Weʼve all heard of Phil Hellmuth. Certainly one of the legends of poker, he holds a record
number of WSOP bracelets and has notched up a massive amount of tournament
winnings. He is self-named the ʻPoker Bratʼ as he has an infamous temper at the green felt
that often leads to name-calling and unsportsmanlike behavior towards his fellow players.
Hellmuth has a huge fan base however and the books he has written have become poker
bibles and a must read for any aspiring player.
This year at the WSOP saw Hellmuth lose his temper at the table after a fellow player
pulled off a successful bluff. His name calling led to a penalty being imposed for his
unsportsmanlike conduct whereby he would be forced to sit out of the following round.
Later that day Hellmuth appealed to the powers that be and the penalty was overturned.
Hellmuth would have lost approximately 80,000 chips had the penalty been upheld but
instead he received a stern warning. Had the player not been Phil Hellmuth do you think
the penalty would have been upheld. Not wishing to sound cynical but I think perhaps it
would!
