WSOP Main Event Begins
July 5, 2008
The 55 events that make up the World Series of Poker have all but drawn to a close. That
is of course all but the grand finale- The $10,000 no limit holdʼem event, more generally
known as the main event. This is generally the event that players want to win as it is
traditionally known as the World Championship event and has the largest field.
Day 1A has been and gone, and it is Mark Garner that is in the lead so far. Although
pleased to end the first day as chip leader, any poker player will tell you that this is by no
means a guarantee of continued success!
Garner finished 25th last year at this event and is definitely hoping to better that result.
Day 1A kicked off with Wayne Newton providing the customary ʻShuffle Up and Dealʼ to
signal the start of proceedings. There were 1,297 playing in this group, with groups B, C
and D to begin over the next few days. The total prize pool wonʼt be known until the fourth
flight takes place on Sunday. The huge tournament field will ensure it is by no means a
small amount.
