Poker in Russia
August 8, 2008
Poker is going sky high in Russia at the moment. It has officially been declared a sport and
the opening next week of the Zavidovo Open is much anticipated. The poker event is
indeed sanctioned by the Government due to its status as a sport, allowing Russians can
enjoy the game and take it to higher levels that is often such a struggle in other countries
around the globe.
Throughout Moscow there are poker clubs opening virtually every week. Some are by
invitation only, some are for high buy-in games and tournaments, whilst others positively
welcome those who are just starting out.
August 16th is the start date of the Zavidovo Open which will attract all the top Russian
players and a few international ones as well. The resort is located outside Moscow and is
usually frequented by Russiaʼs Government officials and other movers and shakers.
The event will consist of around 5 different tournaments as well as $10,000 buy-in main
event. The Aussie Millions champion Alex Kostritsyn will be present, as will this years
WSOP finalist Ivan Demidov, bracelet winners Vitaly Lunkin and Alex Kravchenko, and
WSOP record-holder Nikolay Evdakov who cashed 10 times during the WSOP in June!
