Poker becoming game of skill in The Netherlands
November 8th, 2008
A court in The Netherlands had to make a simple ruling the other day and decided to maybe turn the complete world of poker upside down. The story started relatively simple and there was not much to it, but the verdict of the court could turn the world of poker up side down.
A professional player from The Netherlands qualified for a tournament in a Holland Casino.
Without his knowledge the casino changed the time of the tournament and di not notify him.
Player then went on to file a suit for 1/16th of the prize money as there were 16 players present in the tournament.
The court then in its infinite wisdom decided to deny the player the claim saying that poker IS a game of skill and that therefore a sharing system of the prize money would be impossible.
This was a significant ruling of course as this might be taken on by not only Dutch players and companies but this can also work in favorur of the "rest of the world".
It still needs to be seen if the rest of the world will go with this verdict, but to me at least it proves that Dutch judges have pokersense.
