Chino Rheem made this a year to remember. After finishing 7th in the WSOP main event in November he now managed to win his first WPT event. This was no laughing matter as the heads up lasted for more then 5 hours. As mentioned in my last article Hoyt Corkins was the other well known pro at the table, but he was severely short stacked. The first 21 hands went by him without any action, but after that it was end of story for Hoyt and no second WPT title for him. His AQ was dominated by Youngs AK and despite the Q on the flop he was out when the turn showed a third King for Young.
Sung, who was chip leader going in and Filippi found their Waterloo against Young as well, but they did it on the same hand. Youngs AA was too strong for his opponents KK and 99.
They always say that you cant win without luck and Chino had that against Evan McNiff when he held A9 against AJ from Evan. The flop was A-7-7 and a split looked the best Chino could hope for. The 9 on the turn gave him the best hand and a harmless 3 gave him a double up. On hand 69 McNiff went home after Rheem called his all in with 10-9 and McNiff could muster no more then 10-4.
Heads up started and Rheem only had 8 million chips against Youngs 14 million, but Chino his aggressive style got him back in the race. He doubled up with a flush around hand number 200 and on hand 221 it was all over. Q-8-3 seemed like a good moment for Young to check raise all in with his Q-5, but Chino managed to find KK in the hole for a pay out of more then 1.5 million US dollars.
