PokerStars Caribbean Adventure starts of year in style
January 15th, 2009
As has been a custom in recent year, the PokerStars Caribbean Adventure (PCA) was the first real big tournament of the year. Not only was the tournament held in the sunshine, but it also had a first prize of nearly $3million. That is enough to wet every poker players appetite.
22 year old Poorya Nazari from Canada proved to be this years strongest after a very short heads-up battle with American Tony Gregg. Benny Spindler finished in 3rd place.
First to go at the final table was long time chip leader Kevin Saul. His KJ was behind all the way against the eventual winners QQ. The former winner of the WPT Bellagio cups winner was gone and eliminated.
Next to go at the final table was a former bracelet winner in the name of Dan Heimiller who won over $300k in this tournament for his 7th place finish. When he went all in with 55 he got re raised by Nazari and tony Gregg. Gregg tabled 99 and Nazari showed 88. as Nazari had everyone covered he was still alive.
Dustin Dirksen was next to go after his AK ran into Spindlers TT and as the board did not show an A or a k it was end of story for the DD man.
Pieter Tielen was the next to go when his AQ found Spindlers 88 way to good.
Well known poker pro Alex Gomez was the next one to be eliminated ina weird hand. He raised pre flop and got called by Spindler. The flop was JJJ and a bet from Gomez got re raised. after a flat call the 5 on the turn got all the chips in the middle where Gomez his AA was outshone by Spindlers KJ for quad Jacks....
The three players left played for a few hours when Gregg doubled up and that gave us the unique situation with 3 players with almost identical stacks.
It as Spindler however who had to depart first after losing two hands in a row. In his last hand he pushed with QJ only to be called by Nazari with AJ. The board brought no help and we were heads-up.
In the fourth hand of heads up play all the chips went in with Nazari holding AT and Gregg Q7.
A Ten on the flop saw Gregg drawing very thin and no help came to his aid on the Turn and river.
