California Casinos Face Lawsuit
May 9, 2009
In poker news today it has been announced that five California Casinos have been named in a lawsuit which is due to the bad beat poker jackpots being offered in California. The plaintiffs in the case have named five casinos in the Los Angeles area who don’t allow poker players to compete for the bad beat jackpot unless they’re playing on a table which takes a $1 from every pot to contribute to the jackpot. The reason this is illegal is because the casinos aren’t allowed to take any sort of fee for the bad beat jackpot as it would make it an illegal lottery.
In California poker is considered to be a game of skill which it definitely is and this is why it’s legal to play in the State. The problem though, is that when casinos want to offer a “luck” based jackpot they can’t take any fee or else it’s classified as being an illegal lottery. The poker players who are suing the casinos believe that this could become a much bigger class action lawsuit due to the fact there are thousands of players listed as co-plaintiffs in the lawsuit.
The casinos that have been named in this lawsuit could be facing tough times in the near future depending on how the case goes. It could potentially cost the casinos millions of dollars which at this point of time isn’t feasible for most operators due to the economy. The lawsuit also states that the bad beat jackpots should be halted immediately since there are illegally running a lottery.
The five casinos that have been named in this lawsuit are all located in the Los Angeles area so if you play poker in the LA area you might be shocked to see the jackpots are gone from the poker rooms. Below are the names of the five casinos that have been named in the lawsuit.
- The Bicycle Club
- Hollywood Park
- Commerce
- Hawaiian Gardens
- Hustler
Not all of the casinos have commented on the lawsuit as of yet, but the Bicycle Club has commented by saying that the lawsuit is false and players could play for the bad beat jackpot on tables that didn’t take the $1 fee from every pot.
