Quebec Born Poker Player Takes Home Canadian Open Main Even Championship

The Main Event at the Canadian Open Championships was just completed yesterday and Quebec born poker player Benjamin Lablond took home the title and the $100K first place prize. The Main Event was a heads-up tournament which features some of the biggest names in poker including last year’s champion Huck Seed. There were a total of 94 poker players who paid the $5K entry fee to fight for their chance to win the title.
Some of the big names in poker who played in the tournament were Huck Seed, Phil Hellmuth, Mike Matusow, Brad Booth, Gavin Smith and Antonio Esfandiari. The tournament featured a best out of three format which helped many players out throughout the event stay alive when they would have otherwise been knocked out if it was single elimination.
On the road victory Benjamin Lablond knocked out many of the favourites to win the tournament including Phil Hellmuth and Brad Booth. Both Phil and Brad are heads-up specialists and Benjamin was definitely hitting cards at the right time and when it counted. In the third and final match of the finals Benjamin and second place finisher Jeff Madsen played for over an hour before they both went all-in. Lablond has the chip lead at this point so if his hand held up the tournament would be over. Lablond was holding pocket 4’s and Jeff held an A/10. The flop was A/10/4 which was more then surprising to most people watching the event, and the flop and turn brought nothing. Benjamin won the Main Event at the Canadian Open with his trip fours and took home first place and $100K.
Heads-up tournaments always seem to draw in the big names in poker, but this year the winner didn’t end up being one of the big names in the tournament like most. Benjamin I’m sure is full of confidence after beating some of the best players in the world in heads-up matches and I can’t wait to see more from the Quebec born poker player.
