Richard Austin Takes Out Two Opponents in One Hand to Win WSOP Bracelet
June 20, 2009
The 35th event of the 2009 World Series of Poker this year was one that won’t be forgotten by some for awhile. The event was a $5K Pot Limit Omaha event which had 363 players put up the $5K buy-in so they could take part in the event. Pot limit Omaha has been becoming a much more popular poker game over the past three years or so and from the amount of players that the tournament drew you can tell that the game has been growing.
The final table was very impressive in this event and it had a rather shocking and surprising ending which noone could have predicted beforehand. When the action was down to three players the players spent some time going back and forth playing small pots with noone taking any unwarranted risks. After playing in small pots for awhile though the tournament came to an abrupt ending when the three players got their chips into the pot in one monster hand.
The three players who made the final three in the event were Richard Austin, Cliff Josephy and Sorel Mizzi. Both Cliff and Sorel were both all-in with high pocket pairs and ended up losing to Austin who had two excellent draws including a flush and straight. Richard Austin played amazing poker the entire tournament and avoided playing in big pots as much as possible. Often he would win hands without the need to show his cards which helped keep his table image rather hard too read.
The most notable professional poker player who finished in the top 20 of this event was Dave “The Devilfish” Ulliott who finished in 16th place. The players who made the final table were as followed.
Richard Austin - $409,484
Sorel Mizzi - $253,048
Cliff Josephy - $166,771
Dan Hindin - $116,748
Rifat Palevic - $86,516
Felipe Ramos - $67,663
Van Marcus - $55,687
Peter Jetten - $48,112
Samuel Ngai - $43,539
