Vitaly Lunkin Captures $40K NLHE Bracelet
June 1, 2009
The $40K No Limit Holdem tournament which is the second event at this year’s World Series of Poker has finally finished after four days of action. The tournament is one of the biggest buy-in tournaments of the entire 2009 World Series of Poker and it brought some of the biggest names in poker out to the Rio casino floor. Most of the big name players had been knocked out early from the event although there were some notable players who made the final table of the event.
When the final table started yesterday the chip counts and the players left in the event were as followed.
Vitaly Lunkin – 4,565,000 Chips
Dani Stern – 1,300,000 Chips
Lex Veldhuis – 3,805,000 Chips
Justin Bonomo – 1,685,000 Chips
Greg Raymer – 3,345,000 Chips
Isaac Haxton – 5,955,000 Chips
Alec Torelli – 2,340,000 Chips
Noah Schwartz – 660,000 Chips
Ted Forrest – 560,000 Chips
With Ted Forrest and Greg Raymer making the final table a lot of players and fans were expecting that one of them might end up winning the event although it wasn’t meant to be. The two short stacks to begin the final table were Forrest and Schwartz and they were both knocked out from the event early on during the final table. Lex and Alec soon followed the other two players who hit the ropes on the final table leaving only five players.
Bonomo and Stern were the next two players to exit the event which left only three players left in the event to battle it out. To start three handed play the players had very even chip stacks and it looked like the tournament could last a little while still, but that wasn’t the case.
When it was three handed play the tournament finished up rather quickly with Raymer finishing in third place and Isaac finishing in second place. Vitaly Lunkin who started the final table in second place managed to outlast all of the other opponents and win the WSOP bracelet. Vitaly won just under $2 million for his efforts and I’m sure that we’ll be seeing more of him this month in some of the other events at this year’s World Series of Poker.
