Matt Hawrilenko Finally Captures an Elusive WSOP Bracelet in $5K Short Handed NL Holdem Event

July 5, 2009

The final tournament in the 2009 WSOP before the Main Event was the $5K Short Handed NL Holdem Event. The tournament had 928 players take part and only 16 of them made it through to day number three. It was anyone’s tournament when day three started, but as the final table started winding down it was clear that Matt would be very tough to beat.

Matt Hawrilenko has been making it into a lot of news over the past few years for his poker achievements, but he was never able to win a WSOP bracelet. Matt had played four final tables previously and was unable to win a bracelet in all of those events, but it was meant to be for him in this event. He had almost a 2:1 chip lead over his opponent when heads-up action started and it took only four hands to complete the tournament.

A big congratulations needs to go out to the winner Matt for playing his best poker game and taking down his first bracelet. I have no doubt in my mind that Matt is going to become a poker player that nobody wants to mess with very shortly. The tournament was loaded up with many of the best players in the world as they were getting in some final practice before the Main Event. Phil Hellmuth had another decent finish in this event as he finished in 24th place. Shaun Deebs also had a good tournament and finished in 26th place.

The nine players who made the final table in the 56th event at the 2009 World Series of Poker were rather unknowns to poker fans except for maybe a couple of the amateur players such as the winner Matt.
