ESPN Inks a New Deal with the World Series of Poker
August 17, 2009
If you live in the United States or you happen to have ESPN with your cable or satellite package then you’ll know that ESPN has been the broadcaster of the World Series of Poker. There contract was going to end after the 2010 World Series of Poker Main Event, but now that they have inked a new deal everyone will be able to watch the WSOP on ESPN for years to come.
The new contract is for seven years which is a long time to commit to something, but ESPN has proven that they want to continue showing poker. The 2009 ratings thus far have been down from the 2008 ratings, but the Main Event is still going to be aired in November which should help the ratings rise. With the new set-up for the Main Event it has helped increased the Main Event viewership by almost 50% which is a huge increase.
Both Harrah’s Entertainment and ESPN have shown that they are doing everything they can to innovate poker and make it become the best game out there. It should be interesting to see how the new contract starts off and if there will be any changes to the current system they run. It would be nice if they had more episodes shown at ESPN over the next few years because currently they don’t really have that many episodes running every year.
Tomorrow will be the first day that ESPN will be broadcasting footage from the 2009 Main Event and they will be airing the first 2 episodes. There are 24 episodes in total for the 2009 WSOP Main Event that will be aired on ESPN over the next few months with the final episodes showing the action from the final table. There will be lots of poker to watch over the next few months on television including the WSOP, 2 Months – 2 Million and several other new poker shows which are premiering this month.
