Poker Stars EPT Main Event Underway In Kyiv Ukraine

The PokerStars.com European Poker Tour Main Event started today and the first group of poker players sat down at the poker tables and played the first seven levels of the tournament. This event was supposed to be held in Russia, but due to the changes in legislation in Russia the event was no longer allowed to be held in the country. Since the event wasn’t allowed to be held in Russia the tournament was moved and is being played in Kyiv, Ukraine.
The tournament is going to easily break the record for being the biggest live poker tournament held throughout the old Soviet Republics region. Ukraine has never hosted a poker tournament of this magnitude and it’s definitely going to help put the country on the map in terms of poker. At the start of the tournament there was an opening ceremony with lots of festivities for all of the players and fans to take part in. It was a great cultural experience for anyone who had never been to the Ukraine in the past.
Day 1A seen a total of 129 players participating in the tournament and the directors expect about 200 more players to participate in Day 1B tomorrow. I’m not sure why they split up the tournament into two day 1’s because the tournament isn’t that large, but either way it doesn’t really make a difference. 93 of the poker players made it through day 1A so there weren’t that many eliminations. The reason for there not being many eliminations is because every player started with 30K in chips and the blinds started out at only 50/100.
Mihaylo Demidenko currently leads the tournament after the first day of action with a little over 145K chips. Mihaylo is a Ukrainian native so it would be a very interesting storyline if he was able to hold onto the lead and win the first ever major poker tournament in the country. With the early success of this event I would suspect to see the Ukraine become a regular stop for the EPT each season.
