2009 World Series of Poker Europe Started This Weekend with Event #1

The first event started this weekend at the 2009 World Series of Poker Europe and it definitely started off with a bigger bang then most series. For the first event the players are playing a $1K NL Holdem Event and there were many big name poker players that showed up for the first tournament. Day 1 has been split up into two groups due to the large playing field and each group had about 300 players show up.

On day 1a the players come out firing and out of the 300 odd players that started the event only about 50 of them made it through the day. The day was filled with non-stop all-in action and it meant that there wouldn’t be another day for many of the starting playing field. Some of the players that left the tournament on day 1a include Erik Siedel, Phil Hellmuth and Barry Greenstein. JP Kelly was the chip leader after day 1a and will have 65K chips to start the second day with.

Day 1b was very similar to how the tournament started off on day 1a and there was a lot of non-stop action. There was a little over 300 players that started the day, but by the end of the day there were only about 50 players left which is very close to how day 1a went. A few of the players that were eliminated from the playing field on day 1b include the likes of Phil Ivey, Annette Obrestad and Allen Cunningham.

There are still lots of pro poker players left in the playing field and they will be pushing for the bracelet on day 2. Some of the remaining pro poker players in the event after both day 1 groupings include Chris Ferguson, John Juanda, Padraig Parkinson and Jeff Lisandro.
