Brian Powell Leads Day 1A Field at the 2009 World Series of Poker Europe Main Event

The 2009 World Series of Poker Europe has been running for about a week now and the Main Event has just started over the weekend. Day 1A had a large playing field 156 players and a little over half of the players managed to make it through the day which was nice too see. A lot of the tournaments that we’ve been covering lately have seen massive day 1 eliminations, but it was a slightly different story for the 2009 WSOPE Main Event.

There were lots of amazing poker players that showed up for the Main Event and many started their journey on day 1A. Often you’ll notice the pro players wait until the final day 1 group before they start playing, but at this event this wasn’t the case. Phil Ivey was the biggest elimination of the day and it happened early into the event which was a shock to a lot of spectators. The remaining players were definitely happy to see him leave the poker room though.

Some of the other players that were unlucky on day 1A include the likes of Patrick Antonius, David Pham, Huck Seed, Roland de Wolfe and Vanessa Rousso. Although there were a lot of pros knocked out of the event there are still many left at this year’s WSOPE Main Event. Some of the short stacks after day 1A include Phil Hellmuth, Scott Montgomery and Mike Matusow. All three of these players are going to need to do some work if they expect to make it past day 2.

The current chip leader after day 1A is Brian Powell who is sitting just shy of 195K chips. There are several players close on his heels though including second place Jason Mercier with almost 190K in chips. Joe Beevers managed to break the 100K chip mark on day 1A and he will be in a good position to make a push for the final table this year.
