Day 1 Recap at the World Poker Tour Merit Cyprus Classic Championship

The World Poker Tour is in Cyprus this week and many big name players have made the trip out for the tournament. Day 1 has been split up into two groups like most of the other live tournaments. On day 1a there were a total of 91 players that showed up to participate. John Tabatabai is the chip leader after day 1a and will be in the top of the leaderboard come day 2. Ludovic Lacay is playing in the event and is sitting in second place, but not far behind is Antonio Esfandiari who is in fourth place. Huck See and Dan Harrington are both still in the event after day 1a and will be back for day 2.
There weren’t many eliminations on day 1, but a couple of the causalities were Shaun Deeb and Jeff Lisandro. There were 90 players for day 1b which happens to be one less then there were for day 1a. Phil Gordon leads the way after day 1b, but he wasn’t able to take the chip lead off of day 1a chip leader. Andy Bloch and Chris Ferguson are both near the top of the leaderboard right now and will be making a push in the tournament by the looks of things.
Allen Cunningham, Kelly Kim, Mike Matusow and Howard Lederer all showed up for the event as well and will be back for day 2 although some of them are sitting with short stacks. Eli Elezra, Jean Robert Bellande, Alec Torelli and John Juanda were all eliminated from the tournament on day 1b and won’t be coming back for action on day 2. Annette Obrestad also participated in the tournament and was eliminated on day 1b and her tournament will be cut a lot shorter then she wanted.
