Erik Cajelais Leads Second Event at 2009 WSOPE after Day One
September 23, 2009
The first event to kick off the 2009 WSOPE was very fast paced and it was definitely a great way to start off the series. Much like the first event, the second event at the WSOPE has been nothing less then stellar. There have been many huge pots on day one of the second event and most of the starting playing field was sent home. Out of the 158 players that started the event there are only 22 left after day 1.
A lot of the pros that are in Vegas for the series competed in this event, but not many of them made it through the day. Some of the pros that were eliminated from the action on the first day include Phil Hellmuth, Juha Helppi, Joe Beevers, Andy Bloch, Chris Ferguson, Mike Matusow, Andy Black, Jani Sointula, Erik Siedel, John Juanda, Phil Ivey, Roland de Wolfe, Huck Seed and Annette Obrestad. As you can see there was a ton of talent that come out for the event today.
Although most of the big name pros have been knocked out of the tournament there were a few that managed to squeak into day two. A few of the remaining 22 players in the tournament include Hoyt Corkins, Allie Prescott, Men Nguyen and Howard Lederer. The chip leader after day 1 is Erik Cajelais who is sitting with 144,900 chips at the moment. There is only one other player in the tournament with over 100K chips so Erik has a sizeable lead over most of the remaining players in the tournament.
Day 2 should be very interesting and I can’t wait to see how Cajelais plays tomorrow with the chip lead. He definitely doesn’t have enough chips to sit out for most of the day, but he could afford to take it slow in the early stages of day 2 to see if he hits any big hands. Lederer is one of the short stacks in the tournament and he will most likely be looking to chip up early in the day so he will either make a move for the final table or bust from the tournament on day 2.
