Sophon Sek Arrested After Winning the British Columbia Poker Championship

Last week the British Columbia Poker Championship was being played and it turned out to have a few more surprises then most people had anticipated. The tournament was filled with some excellent talent including many professional poker players. Some of the poker players that made it out for the event include Brad Booth, Gavin Smith and Tiffany Michelle.

There were a total of 679 players that showed up for the event in BC with a large percentage of the players being Canadian. The eventual winner of the tournament Sophon Sek managed to outlast a playing field filled with pros, but it turned out that Sophon had a few secrets. Sophon Sek ended up being arrested after winning the tournament in connection with a huge murder case which is known as the “Surrey Six”

The RCMP told the casino that they needed to hold onto the $364,364 prize money and it’s expected that the money will be permanently seized. The tournament only had a buy-in of $2700 Canadian Dollars and I’m sure Sek wasn’t expecting this to happen. Not only did he managed to outlast the playing field, but now he most likely won’t receive his winnings plus he is going to be in prison for the time being until his trial.

After going through some of the newspapers in Vancouver it seems that Sophon Sek is connected with one of the biggest gangs in the BC region. The police haven’t been releasing many details about the case since the arrest yet, but I’m sure this won’t be the last we hear about Mr. Sek. I’m not sure how Sek expected to get away with winning one of the biggest poker tournaments in Canada without being noticed by the authorities, but it goes to show you that poker can be good for some things that you wouldn’t normally expect.
