PokerStars Sets New World Record

This isn’t the first time that we have talked about PokerStars and world records on this blog. In an attempt to show the online poker world that PokerStars is still the biggest poker room around they held a massive $300K guaranteed tournament on Sunday. The buy-in for the tournament was only $1 and many players were able to qualify through satellite events for as little as a few cents.

With $300K guaranteed in the prize pool it was a certainty that PokerStars would lose some money by hosting this world record attempt. With the size of the prize pool the winner was guaranteed $50K and 30,000 players were guaranteed to make money in the tournament. In all there were a total of 149,196 players that participated in the record breaking tournament. The previous record which was already held by PokerStars was shattered and now it’s going to be nearly impossible for another poker room to beat this world record.

The only poker room that would have a chance at beating the record would be Full Tilt, but they would need to take a major lose on the tournament in order to have a massive prize pool with lots of players making money. They would also need to ensure that they could keep the poker room online as they have been having some problems recently. Over the weekend Full Tilt Poker’s network went out on the East Coast and it took a couple hours before it was live again.

The winner of the PokerStars world record breaking tournament was Oskar69. As mentioned he took home $50K for his efforts and I’m sure he’s ecstatic about his late Christmas gift. It was an awesome year of poker and I’m sure 2010 is going to be even bigger. I hope everyone had a profitable year and an awesome Christmas!
