uan Carlos Mortensen was born in Ecuador in 1972, but his family moved to Spain when he was very young. Mortensen began playing poker in casinos in Madrid at the age of 17, and in the late 1990s made the move to the United States. In 1999, fellow Spanish poker players assisted Mortensen with the buy in for the World Series of Poker, but Juan was bumped out half way through. Mortensen did not give up, and played cash games in Vegas for the next few months, eventually racking up over $50,000. This amount was small compared to what the future brought to Juan, as in 2001 he took three major tournaments in a row including the WSOP Main Event title. He is considered the last poker player to have won that prestigious title as an established professional.
