Stu Ungar
Current Residence: Deceased
Birth Place: New York, USA
Born in: 1953
Summary:
Stu Ungar has been called the greatest Texas hold 'em player of all time, largely due to his incredible three World Series of Poker Main Event wins including two back to back. Only Johnny Moss has ever equaled this feat, and poker fans are quick to point out that Moss won his first by the vote of players and not due to a tournament victory.
Ungar got his start at cards in the game of gin rummy; he dropped out of school at that age of 14 and was regarded as the best player in New York City. Ungar made the move to poker because he could find no opponents in rummy anymore because of his superiority, so he took up poker. He was well known for his cocky attitude, often ridiculing those who he felt played at a level beneath him. This included most people, as Ungar had not only a genius IQ but also a photographic memory.
Sadly, these and consistent wins were not enough to fill his life; he turned to drug use and this led to bankruptcy and a refusal to bankroll him by other players. Ungar never dried out and was found dead of a heart attack, with drugs in his system, in 1998. Despite all of his victories, he had no money to his name. Still, his reputation when it comes to playing the game of poker is firmly established.
